Citrus County Landfill announces fee updates and credit card system improvements starting Oct. 1

September 25, 2025

Effective Oct. 1, 2025, the Citrus County Landfill will implement updated disposal fees and introduce a new credit card processing system designed to improve long-term service and customer convenience.

The changes will help fund future landfill expansion projects and address rising operational costs due to inflation.

Updated disposal fees (effective Oct. 1):

  • Transaction fee: Increasing from $5 to $6
  • Yard waste: Increasing from $30 per ton to $33 per ton
  • Household trash: Increasing from $40 per ton to $46 per ton
  • Construction materials: Increasing from $120 per ton to $134 per ton

Credit card fee structure change

The landfill is also updating its credit card processing fees. Currently, customers are charged a flat 3.5% fee per transaction. Beginning Oct. 1, the new fee will be 2.75% or $1.95 minimum, whichever is higher.

New payment technology

The updated credit card system will also allow for more flexible and convenient payment options. In addition to standard swipe payments, the following methods will now be accepted:

  • Chip insert
  • Tap-to-pay
  • Google Pay
  • Apple Pay
  • Samsung Pay

Previously, only magnetic stripe (swipe) payments were accepted.

Ways to save

To help minimize the impact of these changes—especially for residents making smaller transactions—the landfill encourages the use of cash or checks to avoid the new card processing minimum. Staff have been proactively informing customers in person throughout September to help ensure a smooth transition in October.

We're here to help

While fee increases can be frustrating, they are necessary to maintain high-quality waste management services and prepare for future needs. Citrus County is committed to keeping residents informed and supported as these changes take effect.
